Insurance for the drives that are not the daily commute.

Dispatch 2

Classic and seasonal cars: how older or occasionally driven vehicles are described

A car that comes out for summer weekends is not used like a daily driver, and insurers have their own words for that.

The short version

  1. Insurers define classic and antique by their own age and use rules.
  2. Some policies for these vehicles use an agreed value instead of market value.
  3. Limits on mileage and storage conditions are common.

Different words

Antique, classic and collector can mean different things to different insurers, often involving age, condition and how the car is used and kept.

Agreed value

Some specialty policies fix the car’s value when the policy begins, instead of setting it at the time of a loss. Documentation such as photographs and appraisals is commonly asked for.

Conditions

Policies may limit annual mileage, require a garage, or exclude daily use. Read these conditions with care.

Where to ask

Your insurer or an agent can say how they define a classic. We do not see vehicles or provide quotes.
