Driving for delivery or rideshare: how personal policies treat it

Many personal auto policies have a clause about driving for pay. If you deliver food or drive for a rideshare service, it pays to read it.

The short version

  1. Personal policies often exclude or limit coverage while driving for pay.
  2. Rideshare and delivery companies provide their own coverage in some phases of a trip.
  3. Ask your insurer about gaps between the personal policy and the company coverage.

The clause

Look for words like “livery” or “for hire” or “carrying persons or property for a fee”. They describe uses a personal policy may not cover.

Company coverage

Many platforms provide insurance during certain phases, such as while carrying a passenger, and less when waiting for a request. Terms differ by company and state.

Possible gaps

There can be a gap between personal coverage and the platform coverage. Some insurers offer endorsements designed to fill it.

Ask the right people

Your insurer can say how your policy applies, and the platform publishes its insurance terms. We are neither and give no quotes.
