Towing and roadside help: what the coverage generally means

A flat tire at night is a bad moment to find out what your roadside coverage includes. A quick read in advance helps.

The short version

  1. Roadside help can come from a policy add-on, a membership, a manufacturer or a credit card.
  2. Typical services include towing, a jump start, a spare tire change and fuel delivery.
  3. Limits on distance, number of calls and cost are common.

Where it comes from

Insurers sell it as an optional add-on. Auto clubs, some new-car warranties and some credit cards include similar services.

Typical services

Towing, battery jump, tire change, lockout service and fuel delivery are common. What is covered varies, and some items are limited to a number of calls a year.

Read the limits

Look for a towing distance, a cap on cost and a rule on which providers you may use. Some plans reimburse you rather than sending a driver.

Before you need it
